A woman is dead after a Tesla blew through a stop sign in South Florida last week, according to the Miami Herald. The crash happened at 9:30 PM on a narrow two lane highway that leads from Florida City to Key Largo. The accident also seriously injured a man standing next to the woman who died, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

22-year-old Benavides Leon Naibel died after the impact of the crash threw her about 20 feet into the woods at the intersection. 27-year-old Angulo Dillion, who was with her, is in serious condition. A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was the first to find them.

The photo below shows what we believe to be the intersection in question, as described by the article. Note that the double yellow lines appear to continue beyond the stop sign, which is slightly recessed from the road.

Also in the hospital is 42 year old George McGee, who police say was the Tesla “driver” who made his way through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign, hitting the side of a parked Chevy Tahoe pickup that Dillion and Naibel were standing behind on the east side shoulder of 905. The crash caused the Tahoe to spin violently, killing Naibel and injuring Dillion.

Based on the description in the article, the Tahoe may have been parked across the street, near the yellow “left/right” arrow sign in the above picture. The driver’s Tesla Model S finally came to a stop after rolling into some branches, according to the police report.

Charges are pending against the driver who is listed in serious condition.

While there is yet no word whether or not Autopilot was involved, expect attention to focus on this detail in light of Musk’s recent push for universal acceptance of his so-called “robotaxis” even as concerns mount about the current state of the Tesla autopilot.
