US Senate approves Trump-backed budget deal

By  |

The US Senate has passed a $2.7tn budget deal backed by President Donald Trump, as lawmakers cleared one of the final hurdles to avert a potential government shutdown in the fall.

The two-year pact, reached during negotiations between the White House and House Democrats, passed by a vote of 67-28, easily clearing the 60-vote threshold required for approval in the GOP-led Senate on Thursday.

The bipartisan deal secures increases in funding for defence and domestic programmes and raises overall spending by $320bn above current levels. The bill also lifts the debt ceiling, allowing the government to continue borrowing to pay its bills.

The House passed the measure last week in a 284-149 vote, with about two-thirds of Republicans voting against it amid concerns among conservative lawmakers over federal spending levels.

Prior to the Senate vote on Thursday morning, Mr Trump reiterated his support for the bill and urged fellow Republicans to back it.

“Budget Deal is phenomenal for our Great Military, our Vets, and Jobs, Jobs, Jobs! Two year deal gets us past the Election. Go for it Republicans, there is always plenty of time to CUT!” he wrote in a tweet.

The bill now heads to Mr Trump’s desk for his signature and is expected to be formally approved by the president.
