Kevin Spacey questioned by UK police over sex assault claims
Kevin Spacey has been questioned by Scotland Yard detectives over sex assault claims in the UK.
The former House Of Cards star faces six allegations from between 1996 and 2013 and was interviewed under caution when police travelled to the US in May.
He was interviewed voluntarily and was not arrested.
News that the 59-year-old had been questioned by officers from London was first reported by Variety.
While the Metropolitan Police did not name the individual questioned when asked for comment, a spokeswoman said: “In May 2019, a man was voluntarily interviewed under caution in America, by officers from the Met’s Complex Case Team.
“He was not arrested. Inquiries are ongoing.”
The allegations were made in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, which saw Spacey among the first Hollywood stars to be accused of sexual misconduct as alleged victims began to speak out.
First to speak publicly about Spacey was actor Anthony Rapp, who alleged he was 14 when the two-time Oscar winner, then 26, made a sexual advance to him in 1986.
Spacey said he did not remember the alleged encounter but apologised for any “inappropriate drunken behaviour”.
The star was sacked from House Of Cards by Netflix in light of the claims against him and he was also erased completely from the film All The Money In The World, with director Sir Ridley Scott opting to recast the role and spend millions on re-shoots.
Spacey has appeared in court in relation to one of the allegations against him – that he groped a young man while he worked at a bar in Nantucket – a popular resort island off Cape Cod – in 2016.
The man has dropped his lawsuit against Spacey but he still faces a criminal charge in the US and pleaded not guilty to indecent assault and battery in January.
In the UK, The Old Vic Theatre – where Spacey was artistic director from 2004 until 2015 – found 20 people claimed they had been subjected to inappropriate behaviour from the actor.
Spacey is one of dozens of famous men who have been accused of sexual misconduct in the past few years, amid the #MeToo movement.
