KBM worked with recycling and sustainability long before it was popular

More than 40 years of experience has made KBM a unique contributor to the industry of EPS recycling – and a more sustainable world.

Many companies today have made the connection between a sustainable business and a viable business, some even made the connection between sustainable investments like recycling and lowering of costs, and most somehow manage to implement sustainability or recycling in their business today. But who thought of this more than 40 years ago?

EPS is the abbreviation of Expandable Polystyrene

EPS recycling solutions since the 1970’s

The worldwide company KBM, which operates out of a small country named Denmark in northern Europe, started working on sustainable business processes long before the concept was properly established. They have been operating on the niche market of EPS recycling since the 1970’s and spend the last 40+ years contributing to the EPS industry with continuous developments and improvements on the process of recycling. This never-ending innovative approach to the market has made them one of the best at developing and producing recycling plants for EPS. EPS is a widely used material throughout the whole world. It is primarily used for packaging, insulation, or as protective material due to the material’s shock absorbing qualities, and likely best recognized as the material fish boxes are made of. EPS stands for Expanded PolyStyrene and is a type of plastic called polymer. The tiny plastic beads are expanded by hot steam to a small fluffy bead usually about 0,3-0,8 cm in diameter. This little bead consists of approx. 98% of air and therefore only 2% of plastic.

Zero Waste and improved profitability

The special construction of the KBM recycling machines ensures individually separated EPS beads with a very low amount of dust, making the beads ready to go back into the production of new EPS products. The quality of the recycled beads is of such high quality that a production can replace about 20% of the virgin beads with recycled beads due to the high similarity of the recycled beads and virgin beads.

This kind of technology means that EPS waste products can be 100% recyclable. A great benefit for the environment, but as well a benefit for the companies making use of the KBM recycling plants. These companies are able to save money on their production by reusing EPS waste. The monetary benefit of recycling is the primary reason for many companies to reuse EPS waste, but greater societal focus on environment, circular economy, and sustainability have convinced even more companies to implement a recycling system and join the vision of a sustainable business world. Along with the rising attention on waste management in societies worldwide, many governments and committees have as well raised attention to policy initiatives to improve the circularity of plastic materials in the economy aiming at elevating resource efficiency, taking the first steps for a new sustainable tomorrow which we must assist together.
